Dual-Income Couples: How W-4 Step 2 Affects Withholding

A practical explanation of W-4 Step 2 for married couples with two jobs, including mid-year drift checks.

Short answer

When two spouses earn wages, each payroll system sees only its own job unless the W-4 instructions account for the other job. Selecting married filing jointly without completing the multiple-jobs section can result in too little withholding during the year. Step 2(b), Step 2(c), or an additional Step 4(c) amount can coordinate withholding. The best option depends on income balance, pay frequency, and how comfortable you are with a larger adjustment on one paycheck.

Why two paychecks need coordination

Payroll tables are designed to estimate withholding from the information on one W-4. They do not automatically know household wages, bonuses, or a spouse’s withholding. The annual return combines the household income, which is why a mid-year check matters.

Step 2(b) versus Step 2(c)

Step 2(b) uses the Multiple Jobs Worksheet to calculate an additional withholding amount. Step 2(c) is a checkbox approach for two jobs with reasonably similar pay. If one job is much larger, the worksheet or a specific Step 4(c) amount may produce a more controlled result.

Three practical approaches

Review the current Form W-4 instructions because thresholds and worksheets can change.

  • Both spouses complete the applicable Step 2 worksheet.
  • Use Step 2(c) when the two jobs and pay levels fit its assumptions.
  • Use a calculated Step 4(c) amount on one job when a precise adjustment is easier to maintain.

The mid-year drift check

Compare combined year-to-date withholding with projected household tax. Recheck after a job change, raise, bonus, or change in filing status. A drift check is a signal for review, not a substitute for tax preparation.

Use the planning tool

Run your own withholding check with current income, paystub, filing status, and paychecks remaining.
