Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you start.

Withholdwise is built around low-friction planning, privacy, and clear limits.

Is Withholdwise tax software?+

No. It is an educational withholding planner. It estimates federal and state liability and suggests planning adjustments, but it does not prepare or file a tax return.

Are my pay statements stored?+

The planner is designed to process paystub information for the request. Local scenarios, pulse history, and Pro status are stored in your browser. You can export an encrypted local backup; Withholdwise does not receive that backup or its password.

Do I need an account to use the planner?+

No. You can use the planner without signing in. Authentication is requested when you begin a Pro checkout so your purchase can be associated with your account.

What happens if I clear my browser cache?+

Local planning data may be removed. Before clearing cache or changing devices, download an encrypted local backup and keep the file and password separately.

Can I track side-hustle income?+

Yes. Enter 1099 income and expenses, or provide business miles so the planner can estimate a standard mileage deduction. Keep receipts and consult a tax professional for filing decisions.

How often should I recheck withholding?+

Quarterly is a practical cadence, plus whenever you receive a raise, bonus, RSU vest, change jobs, marry, add a dependent, or start significant side work.

Does it support multiple W-2s and 1099s?+

Yes. Add another W-2 or spouse income, then use the bonus/RSU and self-employment fields for additional income sources.

Can I use the W-4 output as tax advice?+

Use it as planning guidance, not a substitute for professional advice. Employer payroll rules and individual facts can change the result.
